• Exhibitions
The Gallery at HAI presents rotating exhibits by self-taught Outsider artists who have
participated in HAI Workshops and The Studio. These artists represent a diverse
spectrum of artistic styles and levels of artistic achievement.

HAI makes The Gallery available to other nonprofit groups.

• Outsider Artists of HAI
The work of Outsider Artists of HAI has been seen in museums, commercial
galleries and nonprofit venues in New York and across the United States and
Europe, including Ray Hamilton, Mercedes Jamison, Kenny McKay, “Lady
Shalimar” Montague, Irene Phillips, Rodney Thornblad and Melvin “Milky” Way,
among others. Outsider Artists of HAI have become known as quintessentially
late 20th/early 21st century American Outsider artists. Check out the online
exhibit, Outsider Artists of HAI, designed by Susan Stoltz, funded in part by the
New York State Council on the Arts.

The feature-length documentary, Not Like in the Movies: A Portrait of Six
Mentally Ill Artists at Work, is available through Logical Chaos Productions.
The director is Kevin R. Frech. Inquire at logicalchaos@verizon.net.

• Outsider Art SURVEY
In conjunction with International Self-Taught Art Week in NYC, during January
and February each year, The Gallery presents a juried exhibit for self-taught
artists with mental disabilities. The exhibit presents new self-taught artists whose
work may not have been seen before in a venue in the heart of Soho, NYC. In the
summer, applications are available from HAI for self-taught Outsider artists with
mental illness across North America, outsider@hainyc.org.
