SURVEY 2005
provides exhibition opportunities for untrained artists with mental
disabilities. The exhibit will demonstrate the individual and nontraditional
ways people with mental disabilities express themselves and will
highlight the excellence of contemporary Outsider art on the American
scene. Untrained artists are invited to submit an application and
examples of their art in slides, photographs or digital prints to
be considered for inclusion.

WHAT IS OUTSIDER
ART?
Unconventional expressions
of the most personal ideas and emotions of the creator. There is
little agreement on definitions and parameters of Outsider art but
it is agreed that Outsider art is not work an academic style of
art nor simulates other historical art movements. NOTE: Academic
art is not the interest of SURVEY 2005.
SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS
HAI (Hospital Audiences,
Inc.) is a nonprofit arts organization that provides access to the
arts for culturally isolated people. Outsider Artists of HAI is
an outgrowth of the HAI Arts Workshop Program that brings participatory
arts to community programs for people with mental disabilities and
has exhibited art by people with mental disabilities for over twenty
years
and
fresh art (www.freshartnyc.org)
is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to expanding the artistic
development and entrepreneurial opportunities for New York City/State
special needs artists. fresh art serves struggling artists with
disabilities by providing exhibition opportunities and art and craft
workshops.
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Entry is open to adults
with mental disabilities and mental health consumers / service users.
A maximum of 5 examples
(slides, photos, digital prints) of an artist’s work per individual
application may be submitted for jurying.
Actual art should not
be sent until accepted into the exhibit. Eligible artwork includes
paintings, drawings, collage or mixed media in 2 or 3 dimensions.
Works of art in 2 dimensions
may be no larger than a combined 130 inches in length, width and
depth and must conform to United Parcel Service (UPS) shipping guidelines
for standard packages. Any 3 dimensional art selected for the exhibit
must be transported at the artist's expense. It will be requested
that selected art be sent unframed.
All art must be available
for sale. Entrant must designate a full retail sale price no higher
than $1,500. HAI will retain a commission of 35% on all sales.
Entrants must agree that
they will be identified as an individual with a mental disability
or mental health consumers / service users. However, entrants may
elect to be listed without name as "anonymous," but a
biography must still be provided.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Submissions for jurying
may be slides, photographs or digital prints (8.5" x 11").
No discs.
Submissions must be labeled
with the artist's name, dimensions of the work, title, and media.
A nonrefundable application
fee of $10 must accompany the application.
Original artwork will
be requested and accepted after the application and selection process.
